Does AEO Work for Local Businesses?

AEO for local business is not the same as AEO for national brands. Picture someone asking ChatGPT or Perplexity "who's the best plumber in Denver". Or "what dentist near me accepts new patients". The answer engine does not just cite content. It pulls in local signals. That means your reviews and your directory data. It means your Google Business Profile and your website authority. This is a different AEO game. But local businesses can still win it.

The opportunity is big and most businesses ignore it. Most local businesses have no AEO strategy at all. So the bar to stand out is low right now. It is much lower than in national content. And the window before rivals catch up is still open.

Does AEO work for local businesses?

Yes. AEO works for local businesses. But the targets are not the same as for national content AEO. For local AI picks, a few signals matter most. First, a full and correct Google Business Profile. Second, the same NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data in every directory. Third, a strong flow of reviews that stays recent. Fourth, a website with local schema markup. Fifth, content about your own area that proves you know it.

How do AI assistants handle local queries?

Google AI Overviews lean hard on a few sources for local queries. They use Google Business Profile data, Google Maps signals, and Google reviews. So a fully optimized GBP is your top local AEO move.

For local queries, ChatGPT uses its browse function. It pulls from Yelp, the Google Maps API, and web search. Have strong profiles on many directories. That raises your odds of being recommended.

Perplexity pulls together three things. It uses reviews, website content, and directory data. Clear, structured local content wins here. Take a line like "We serve the greater Austin area with same-day HVAC repair". It beats a generic service page.

Voice assistants include Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. They pull from directories, from GBP, and from structured local schema. Do your customers use voice search? Then local schema is a must.

What AEO actions have the highest impact for local businesses?

Complete and keep up your Google Business Profile. Fill every field. Update photos each month. Work the Q&A section often. Hold at least a 4.2+ star rating with recent reviews. This is the base of local AI visibility.

Add LocalBusiness schema to your website. Use JSON-LD for your business name, address, and phone. Cover your service area, hours, and price range too. This gives AI systems clear, structured data to cite.

Build local landing pages. Make one page for each city or neighborhood that you serve. Write real content about the work you do in that area. A generic service page will not earn the same local AEO visibility.

Collect reviews and reply to them. AI looks at how many you have, how recent they are, and how often you reply. Say one business has 200 recent reviews and active owner replies. It will likely beat one with 20 older reviews when AI makes a pick.

Keep your NAP the same across every directory. A name, address, or phone that does not match will hurt you. Check Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and industry directories. Each mismatch waters down your local authority. Use a NAP consistency tool to find and fix the gaps.

For local businesses, the best AEO strategy starts offline. Be genuinely excellent at your service. Collect reviews. And make sure every directory knows who you are and where you are.

Can local service content earn AI citations the way national content does?

Yes. And most businesses miss this. Think of a local plumber who runs a blog. It covers common plumbing issues in the Denver area. It explains local water quality concerns. It shares seasonal tips for Colorado homes. That is expert, local content. It earns AI citations for the right queries. This kind of content sits on top of your GBP and directory work.

Does service area matter for local AI recommendations?

Yes. Define your service area clearly. Do it in GBP, in your schema markup, and on your website. This sharpens local AI picks a lot. Vague labels like "greater metro area" do worse. Clear ones work better, such as "we serve Denver, Lakewood, Aurora, and Highlands Ranch". The clearer you are about where you work, the better AI engines can match you to nearby queries.

How many reviews does a local business need for AI recommendations?

There is no hard minimum. But patterns from 2025-2026 point to a pattern. Businesses with fewer than 25 recent reviews tend to struggle. Recent means the last 12 months. They show up far less in AI local recommendations than those with 50 or more. Review velocity matters as much as the total. A steady flow of new reviews signals an active, current business. Aim for at least 2-3 new reviews per month as a floor.

Does AEO help with "near me" searches?

Google still answers "near me" queries mostly with map results. For these, AI Overviews weight GBP data heavily. So content strategy matters less for pure "near me" intent. It matters more for the research questions that come first. Think "best HVAC company in Denver" or "what to look for in a plumber". Optimize GBP for the near-me queries. Optimize content for the research-phase ones.
