Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness — the four signals Google uses to decide if your content is worth surfacing. Most sites demonstrate none of them intentionally.

Google E-E-A-T in 2026: The Difference Between a Site Google Trusts and One It Tolerates

Google'sSearch Quality Rater Guidelines introduced E-E-A-T as the framework human raters use to evaluate content quality. These ratings feed into algorithm training. Understanding E-E-A-T is not academic — it explains why some sites rank despite thin backlink profiles and why others with thousands of links fail to break page one.

What Each Signal Actually Means

Experience

The newest addition to the framework (the first E was added in 2022). Experience asks: does the creator of this content have actual first-hand experience with the topic? A dental practice writing about dental implants from the perspective of having performed thousands of them demonstrates experience. A content farm writing a generic "dental implants explained" article does not.

Expertise

Does the content creator have the formal or demonstrated knowledge required to write authoritatively on this topic? For YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics — health, legal, financial — expertise requires verifiable credentials. Author bios with credentials, professional affiliations, and publication history are not optional for healthcare sites. They are requirements for Google to trust the content.

Authoritativeness

What does the broader web say about the creator? Are they cited by other authoritative sites? Do credible publications reference their work or quote them as an expert? Authoritativeness is primarily built through editorial backlinks, expert citations, and industry recognition — not self-declaration.

Trustworthiness

Is the site honest and transparent? Does it have a clear privacy policy, accurate contact information, visible terms of service, and clear disclosure of affiliations? For e-commerce, does it show secure payment methods? For healthcare, does it disclose medical review processes? Trustworthiness is the foundation — Google will not recommend a site it does not trust, regardless of how strong the other signals are.

The Most Actionable E-E-A-T Improvements

Add detailed author bios to every piece of content — name, credentials, experience, and photo

Have content reviewed by credentialed professionals in relevant fields and disclose this

Build an About page that tells your real story with verifiable facts, team profiles, and credentials

Pursue editorial coverage in industry publications to build external authority signals

Maintain accurate, consistent business information across all web properties

E-E-A-T is not a checklist you complete once. It is an ongoing investment in demonstrating that your site deserves to be the most trusted source in your category.
