Mostlocal SEO analysis works at the wrong level of detail. A business checks who ranks in the map pack, then decides its competitors are simply "doing better at SEO." Yet it never learns why they rank higher. That gap between a guess and a real plan is where most local SEO work stalls.

A good local competitor analysis checks the signals that drive local ranking. First is the review profile, then how complete the GBP is. Next comes the citation footprint, or where the business is listed. After that, weigh website authority and the depth of local content. For each one, you ask whether a rival is ahead, on par, or behind. That hands you a clear action list, not a shrug and a guess. You never again have to say they are simply doing better at SEO.

The Five Signals to Analyze

The first signal is the review profile. Look at total review count, average rating, response rate, and how recent the reviews are, then read what they actually say. One competitor has 250 recent reviews at a 4.9 rating, replies quickly, and shows a strong review signal. That outperforms a rival with 80 reviews at 4.7 and slow replies. The gap tells you how many reviews you need, and how fast to earn them to reach parity.

The second signal is GBP completeness. Are all the sections filled in, and is the description rich with keywords? Are services listed, and do regular Google Posts go out? Does each relevant category have enough photos? One competitor keeps a full GBP and posts often, which gives them a built-in edge. A bare profile cannot beat that edge in GBP ranking signals.

The third signal is website authority. It covers domain authority and the number of domains that link to the site. It also weighs how good those links are and how much local content supports them. Tools like Ahrefs or Semrush reveal a competitor's backlink profile. Check where the authority comes from: local links, national ones, or purchased placements. That tells you whether it will hold up over time. It also shows how to build a profile that matches or beats theirs.

The fourth signal is local content. Look at how deep and specific their content is. Do they have service-area pages, local blog posts, and local resources? One rival often leads local search. They just built more local content than the rest. A content gap analysis reveals the openings. It finds topics and areas no one serves well yet.

The fifth signal is citation footprint. Where is the rival listed, and are the citations the same everywhere? Do they have category-specific citations on sites that fit the industry? This one is harder to see than the rest. But it still counts just as much. It builds the entity strength behind local ranking.

A competitor analysis reveals two kinds of opportunity. The first is closing gaps. A gap is where a top competitor holds a clear edge, and that edge helps explain their higher rank. Close these gaps first. The second is open space, where no competitor has a strong presence yet. It lets you seize the advantage before your rivals do.

Local SEO offers some common open-space wins. A few parts of your service area sit wide open. No rival posts local content there yet. Some category directories barely feature your type of business. Other local topics draw lots of searches, yet no local site covers them. Grab these before rivals do. Rankings you win this way are easier to hold. They beat ones you take from a strong rival.

Building the Competitive Action Plan

A competitor analysis should end in a ranked action list. Sort it by impact and effort. Do the quick, high-value tasks right away: fill in GBP sections, update GBP photos, and seed Q&A. Plan the mid-level tasks for the next 30-60 days. These build more location-specific content and drive a steady review push. Save the big, hard tasks for six-to-twelve-month programs.
