Wix vs. Squarespace for Business: Which Platform Should You Actually Choose?

Wix vs. Squarespace is a comparison that most small business owners make at some point - usually when they need a website and are trying to avoid the cost and complexity of a custom build. Both platforms are legitimate tools. Both serve real needs. The comparison, however, is frequently muddled by marketing that emphasizes each platform's strengths without honestly addressing its limitations.

This piece compares both platforms across the dimensions that matter most to small business operators: design output quality, e-commerce capability, SEO performance, pricing, and the flexibility to grow without hitting a ceiling. It also addresses the question that most comparison articles avoid: when you should use neither.

Design Quality and Template Quality

Squarespace wins on design quality, and the gap is visible. Squarespace's templates are designed by professional designers following consistent aesthetic principles - clean typography, considered whitespace, and visual systems that hold together across pages. Wix's template library is larger but inconsistent: some templates are well-designed, many are not, and the extreme flexibility of the Wix editor makes it easy to break the visual coherence of a good starting template. For businesses where first-impression design quality is important - professional services, creative industries, hospitality - Squarespace's floor is meaningfully higher.

E-Commerce Capability

Wix has meaningfully expanded its e-commerce features in recent years and now handles standard online retail needs competently: product catalogs, inventory management, discount codes, and payment processing through multiple gateways. Squarespace's commerce plans are cleaner and better designed but more limited in the depth of features available without third-party apps. For a small product business with a modest catalog, both platforms work. For an e-commerce business planning to scale beyond a few hundred products or needing advanced checkout customization, neither Wix nor Squarespace is the right answer - see shopify-vs-woocommerce for the right comparison at that stage.

SEO Performance

Both platforms have improved their SEO capabilities over the years. Page titles, meta descriptions, URL structures, and basic technical SEO are configurable on both. The real SEO limitation of both Wix and Squarespace is structural: the generated markup and JavaScript rendering patterns are not optimal for crawling, and neither platform gives developers the low-level control over page architecture and performance that custom-built sites on Webflow, Framer, or well-configured WordPress do. For businesses where organic search is a primary growth channel, this is a real constraint.

Pricing

Wix Business plans run $27-$32/month. Squarespace Personal and Business plans run $25-$36/month. Both are competitive for what they include. The pricing comparison matters most at the e-commerce tier - Wix's Business e-commerce plan at $35/month and Squarespace's Commerce plans at $28-$52/month are comparable, but feature availability varies enough that the pricing decision should follow the feature evaluation, not precede it.

"For clients who genuinely need a fast, low-cost website and have no intention of scaling, both Wix and Squarespace are honest choices. The problem is when businesses outgrow the platform and discover they cannot migrate cleanly - that is a real hidden cost." - Ravve Jay, TTGC

The Honest Verdict

Choose Squarespace if: design quality and visual polish are important, you are in a design-sensitive industry (hospitality, creative services, fashion, health and wellness), and your site needs are straightforward - portfolio, brochure, or light e-commerce. Choose Wix if: you need more flexibility in page layout (Wix's freeform editor is genuinely more flexible than Squarespace's), you need a broader app marketplace, or you want to iterate on design without design knowledge. Choose neither if: your site is a primary revenue channel, you need serious SEO performance, or you anticipate needing a CMS with content management beyond basic blogging. In those cases, Webflow, Framer, or a well-built WordPress site - and a partner like TTGC to build it - will deliver meaningfully better returns.
